David Corenswet Thought Superman Audition Was for Top Gun 3
David Corenswet reveals his surprise at being cast as Superman, sharing how he initially mistook the audition call for a different blockbuster. His journey from uncertainty to fan favourite is one for the books.
David Corenswet’s journey to donning the iconic cape wasn’t exactly what you’d call straightforward. When he first got the call to audition, he was up a ladder, swapping out a lightbulb, and had no inkling it was about the world’s most famous superhero.
“When I got the audition, I was standing on a ladder changing a light fixture. My agent said, ‘We think you know what this is about.’ I said, ‘Is it Top Gun 3? What am I waiting for?’”
he recalled in a chat with Jonathan Bailey. Corenswet admitted he never saw it coming, even if others around him seemed to reckon he was a shoo-in.
“I really was not expecting it, although I think other people thought that I should be expecting it. Just statistically speaking, it feels completely impossible.”
From Indie Roles to the Big League
At the time, Corenswet was best known for smaller gigs like the horror flick Pearl and the series The Politician. Meanwhile, punters had their money on blokes like Nicholas Hoult or Jacob Elordi to take over the role. Plenty of fans were still holding out hope for Henry Cavill’s return, not quite ready to let go of the previous Man of Steel.
Despite the initial shock, Corenswet managed to win over even the most sceptical DC diehards. The film raked in over $616 million globally, a tidy sum by any measure. With the sequel, Man of Tomorrow, already in the works, early glimpses suggest Corenswet’s hero will be teaming up with Hoult’s Lex Luthor to take on Braniac.
Bonding Over Theatre and Not Being 'Cool'
The rest of the interview saw Corenswet and Bailey swapping stories about their theatre days, flying, and what it means to be cool. Corenswet was quick to downplay his own cool factor, even telling director James Gunn as much before taking on the role.
“If you wanted somebody cool, you should have hired somebody else,”
he joked, recalling Gunn’s response:
“Oh, believe me. I know.”
Man of Tomorrow is set to hit Aussie screens on 9 July 2027. For those keen to keep up with the DCU’s next chapter, there’s plenty more on the horizon, with guides available for anyone wanting to watch the films in order or catch up on upcoming releases.
