James Gunn has finally addressed the swirling rumours about Wonder Woman’s future and the next big casting in the DCU. Find out what he revealed about upcoming roles and what’s really happening behind the scenes.

With Gal Gadot stepping away from her iconic role, speculation has been running wild about who might step into the boots of the next major female hero in the DC Universe. James Gunn, who’s been fielding questions left, right and centre, recently took to Threads to clear up a few things for fans keen for answers.

When asked if auditions for Batman had wrapped up at the end of 2025, Gunn was quick to put that rumour to bed. He also dismissed any talk of Wonder Woman auditions, calling those reports “false”.

We’re also not casting WW, nor even discussing it, until a script is finished.

Gunn was also quizzed about whether Wonder Woman would appear in the Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow. He denied those leaks, but did let slip that they’re “currently casting a female character in MoT”, though he made it clear that scoopers have jumped the gun by assuming it’s Wonder Woman.

He didn’t reveal who this new character might be, but the fact he’s even mentioning it has fans guessing. Some reckon it could be Maxima, the formidable queen from Almerac, while others are tipping Jenny Sparks, the leader of Stormwatch and The Authority, as a strong possibility.

Wonder Woman’s Future: No Rush on Casting

Last year, Gunn spoke about the new direction for the DCU and made it clear that casting for Wonder Woman isn’t on the cards until there’s a finished script. He’s sticking to his guns, saying that no one will be considered for the role until the story is locked in.

It’s a priority, but I wouldn’t call that fast-tracked. Nothing is going to be shot unless we’re as sure as we can be that the script is good.

He’s also warned fans not to get carried away with every rumour floating around online. For instance, when he followed Adria Arjona on Instagram, some punters immediately assumed she was the new Wonder Woman. Gunn had to step in and clarify:

I follow Adria on Instagram but everybody came out [and said], ‘He just followed her, that means she’s Wonder Woman.’ She’d be a great Wonder Woman, by the way. She was in a film that I made seven years ago. We’ve been friends and have known each other since that time. I followed her then, I didn’t just follow her.

So far, there’s been no official word on the untitled Wonder Woman project.

Updates on Batman, Flash and Other DCU Roles

Gunn hasn’t just been fielding questions about Wonder Woman. He’s also shot down a report claiming the upcoming Brave and the Bold film, directed by Andy Muschietti, was set for a 2028 release and would focus on Batman and Damian Wayne. Gunn simply called the report “fiction” and confirmed the screenplay isn’t finished yet.

He was also asked if there’d been a secret test screening for Batman last year, to which he responded in his usual style, leaving no room for doubt. As for the Flash, fans have been vocal about wanting Grant Gustin to return in the revamped universe, but Gunn hasn’t given anything away. He’s made it clear that the script always comes first, and there’s no rush to announce who’ll take on the role next.

At this stage, casting for smaller roles in Man of Tomorrow is underway, but the big names are still up in the air. Gunn’s approach is to get the story right before making any casting calls, so fans will have to wait a bit longer for concrete news.

Man of Tomorrow is set to hit cinemas on 9 July 2027.
