The original 1977 Star Wars is coming back to cinemas for its 50th anniversary, giving fans a rare chance to see the unaltered version on the big screen for the first time in nearly five decades.

Star Wars fans are in for a treat, with the original 1977 version set to hit cinemas for its 50th anniversary. The much-loved classic will be back on the big screen on 19 February 2027, so there’s a bit of a wait, but it’s shaping up to be a proper event for anyone who’s keen on the saga’s roots. This marks the first time in almost 47 years that the unedited version will be shown in theatres, making it a rare opportunity for both long-time fans and newcomers to experience the film as it was first released.

There’s talk that the film could also be screened in IMAX, though nothing’s been locked in by Disney or Lucasfilm just yet. If it does happen, it’ll be the first time punters can catch the original cut in such a format, adding another layer of excitement for those who want to see every detail on the big screen.

Han Shoots First: The Scene That Sparked Debate

One of the biggest drawcards for this release is the return of a scene that’s sparked plenty of debate over the years. In the original cut, Han Solo, played by Harrison Ford, shoots Greedo first in the Mos Eisley cantina. This moment was later changed by George Lucas in 1997, making it look like Greedo fired first, supposedly to give Han a bit more justification for his actions. The change didn’t go down well with heaps of fans, who’ve argued ever since about who really shot first.

With the 1977 version back in cinemas, audiences will see the scene as it was originally intended.

"Maclunkey!" will be no more.

The infamous line added in the 2019 re-release, where Greedo shouts before copping it, won’t be part of this screening. For many, that’s reason enough to grab a ticket.

Changes Over the Years: What’s Different?

Star Wars has seen its fair share of tweaks and updates since it first hit screens. The 1997 Special Edition brought in a CGI Jabba the Hutt, changed the colour of Luke’s lightsaber from blue to green and back again, and even cut out the scene where Han and Luke take out a couple of Imperial Officers. Each new version has sparked its own round of debate among fans, with some changes more popular than others.

The 2019 Disney re-release added another controversial moment, with Greedo’s last word before being shot. For many, these changes have taken the mickey out of what made the original so special. The upcoming anniversary screening is a chance to see the film without any of the later edits or additions.

Looking Ahead: What’s Next for Star Wars?

With the original film making its return, there’s plenty of buzz about what else is on the horizon for the franchise. New films and series are in the works, and fans are already speculating about which stories will hit the big screen next. Whether you’re a die-hard fan or just keen to see what all the fuss is about, the 50th anniversary screening is shaping up to be a must-see event.

So, which instalment are you most looking forward to? The Mandalorian & Grogu, or maybe Star Wars: Starfighter? There’s no shortage of options for anyone wanting to dive back into a galaxy far, far away.
